Statement on students displaced by the war in Ukraine

The Faculty of Medicine in Würzburg is deeply saddened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the resulting war, and the suffering it has brought upon so many people.

It is much to our regret that medicine and dentistry students both in and from Ukraine have been forced to interrupt their studies and have been displaced because of the war.

We are determined to provide assistance within the scope of our capabilities and capacity. However, the number of places on degree courses of medicine and dentistry at all the German universities is limited by the capacity to teach in the university hospitals. Any change in these numbers requires decisions on state and national level.

The Association of faculties of medicine of the German universities (Medizinischer Fakultätentag, MFT) is currently conducting talks with representatives of the Federal States to explore all possible ways of support. Since the Federal States need to address complex legal questions and create the necessary political foundations of such support, these talks will take time.

We therefore request of everyone affected their understanding that we are currently unable to provide tangible support until a clear mandate and framework exists.

The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) has now set up a specific service, the National Academic Contact Point Ukraine, which aims to provide a central portal of information for those directly affected by the invasion of Ukraine seeking to relocate to Germany to continue with studying or research.
